The Keeper Project – Maroochydore 2026

RED CHAIR, a Sunshine Coast performing arts company dedicated to community engagement, is bringing its celebrated, socially engaged live art project, The Keeper Project, to Maroochydore on Gubbi Gubbi country in 2026.

Following successful iterations in Coolum, Nambour and Caloundra, your generous support will see this ambitious project engage ten local artists to serve as ‘Keepers,’ each performing a unique three-week creative ritual in a public space.

Running over 30 weeks, The Keeper Project is an inherently participatory experience designed to break down access barriers to the arts, connect the community through shared stories, and engage everyone—residents, workers, and visitors—in a playful, transformative presence within their everyday life.

An immersive experience for the community, local artists drawn from diverse backgrounds and creative disciplines, become the archaeologists of local stories in the role of ‘Keeper’ – facilitating creative exchanges, offerings and connection between artists and the community and creating an experience that exists in a particular moment in space and time.

Everyday spaces are transformed over the duration of the project with one Keeper at a time contributing their own part to this playful ‘anomaly’ in the town.

The Keeper is for everyone – audiences are those who incidentally encounter the Keepers ‘in place’, residents, visitors and workers of Maroochydore, not just arts-loving audiences. Previous iterations of the Keeper Project – Caloundra (2025), Nambour (2024/25), Coolum (2021/22)  – have been witnessed by over 125,000 people during the roll-out in these communities.
