Films in the Forest is an annual, independent film and arts event held in the rainforest of Kabi Kabi Country/Sunshine Coast Hinterland, showcasing environmental and cultural storytelling. The event brings together filmmakers – from emerging local talent to established international names – but it’s so much more than a film screening. Expect a nature-based art exhibition by local visual artists, environmental speakers, theatrical intervention and community participation and connection. Participants of all ages and walks of life come together in a beautiful rainforest setting to celebrate nature and the arts. This October 10th 2026 marks the 4th edition of Films in the Forest, delivered through the not-for-profit incorporated association YSDM Inc.

The gathering is evolving from a grassroots initiative into a renowned regional community event – one that gives a platform to nature and place-based storytelling, and fosters environmental action and stewardship. Many attendees return each year, with word of mouth generating most of our exposure – proof of a genuine appetite for outdoor arts and film events like this. One day, the event may tour to other regional communities to expand its reach and impact.
Films in the Forest matters because it connects people to nature and community through creative storytelling in a pristine rainforest setting – surrounded by tall trees, a flowing creek and birdsong. It fosters environmental and cultural education, care and advocacy, and supports personal well-being through meaningful, in-person gathering. In a world heavily drenched in environmental degradation and nature disconnection, coming together in the forest is a powerful antidote – strengthening communal bonds and connection to Country.
